Imperialism in Hawaii exemplifies the tremendous benefits of economic and militaristic control of once foreign countries.
Located between North America and Asia in the middle of the Pacific Ocean
3/4th of wealth from sugar made by sugar plantations
Pineapples were considered a delicacy to lands outside of Hawaii
American missionaries came to Hawaii in hopes of saving their souls by converting them to christianity
The Monroe Doctrine was brought back into play in 1846, warning foreign imperialist countries that Hawaii was off-limits
Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 enabled America to Hawaii's sugar market as well as other lands, including Pearl Harbor
Businessmen who saw the great potential in the sugar market in Hawaii came soon after
They soon took control of the plantations which was imported into America duty-free
This was soon changed in the McKinley Tariff of 1890, making Americans buy domestic goods for a better price
